Facebook, now known as Meta, was launched in 2004. The biggest networking platform was founded by Mark Zuckerberg. Instagram

Yes! The widely used social media platform by the people ahs been acquired by Facebook. Instagram is that platform where people share their photos, reels, videos, and so much more. It has now become one of the biggest platforms to promote business. Instagram was launched in 2010, and it was in the year 2012 when Facebook acquired it. Facebook acquired Instagram for $1.0 billion in 2012. Several reports affirm, Instagram alone generate more ad revenue as compared to Facebook, its parent company. When Facebook acquired Instagram, it wanted to make it an independent app for sharing images.

WhatsApp

Not very sure but some of us might already know that Facebook own WhatsApp. WhatsApp is known to be the most popular and renowned messaging app. When WhatsApp was launched in the year 2009, it was launched with the aim to provide people with free text and calling facility. Till date WhatsApp allow its users to use the messaging and calling facility without any payment. When Facebook acquired WhatsApp, its value was $1.5 billion. However, Facebook acquired WhatsApp for $19 billion. Its not yet clear that how much exact revenue does WhatsApp generates per year. However, in 2020 the estimated revenue it generated was $5.5 billion.

Oculus VR

Oculus VR is a virtual reality hardware and software company. Facebook acquired Oculus VR just within a couple of weeks after acquiring WhatsApp. The company is known for its Oculus Rift product and was founded in 2012. Oculus rift product is a virtual reality headset and was specially designed for video gaming. It was back in the year 2014 when Facebook acquired Oculus VR. Facebook acquired the company for $2 billion. After Facebook acquired it, it was in talks for its products in the virtual reality market.

Beluga

Beluga was a messaging app that was released in the year 2010. Just after one year of its launch, Facebook acquired Beluga in 2011. No one know for much Facebook acquired Beluga. This was one of the most successful messaging platforms that Facebook acquired. It is clear fact that Facebook acquired the most potential rivals of that time.

Onavo

Onavo is an Israeli web analytical company. The company was made to perform web analytics on different mobile apps to determine customer usage. The company was founded in 2010 and in 2013 Facebook acquired Onavo. The estimated cost of for how much Facebook acquired Onavo is somewhere between $100-200 million. Onavo was an independent company when it was acquired. However, it is said that Onavo’s technology helped Facebook to make important early determinations regarding other apps and companies to acquire. Onavo has been criticized several times for being a spyware.

Messenger

Before reading this article, did you know that messenger in 2008 was originally developed as Facebook chat? In 2010 Facebook reconstructed its messaging service in 2010. It also released its standalone iOS and Android apps in August 2011. In the year 2020, Facebook officially launched Messenger for Desktop. The messenger is supported on macOS and Windows 10. There are more than 1.3 billion messenger users worldwide. Facebook separated the messaging facility from the main Facebook app to let users use the web interface.

LiveRail

LiveRail is a video ad tech start-up. The main aim of this start-up is to connect marketers and publishers through the web and mobile phones. The LiveRail firm was acquired by the Facebook in 2014. The price at which it was acquired was $500 million. LiveRail was launched in 2007 and at present has a huge customer support. The support is mainly from ABC family, A&E Networks, Major League Baseball, Dailymotion, and Gannett. LiveRail had a target of generating $100 million revenue. Luckily, Facebook offered them with much more than that.

Ascenta

In the year 2014, Facebook acquired Ascenta. The price at which it was acquired is still not known. However, some reports suggest that was not even $20 million. Interestingly, Facebook at the time of acquiring Ascenta said that it is not at all interested in the company, all they are interested in is the minds of engineers working in Ascenta. Ascenta is known to be the solar0powered drone maker company. Its main is to provide internet connectivity to the remote areas all over the world. Facebook basically acquired only a team of engineers from Ascenta consisting of five members.

FriendFeed

FriendFeed was a platform that collected information from several social media sites, articles, RSS feed, and blogs. Facebook acquired FriendFeed in 2008 at a price of $47.5 million. FriendFeed is said to be among the first companies for or in which Meta has invested. When the FriendFeed was acquired, it was just a start-up that allowed users to share link and status update online. According to reports, Facebook only paid $15 million in cash whereas the rest was directly invested in Facebook stock. Listed above were some of the well- known companies that Facebook acquired.
